meaning “The Grapefruit” in French – was a faceless disco ensemble by producers Laurin Rinder & W. Michael Lewis. No actual group existed, all the vocals were done by interchangeable session singers, similar to Rinder & Lewis’ other brainchild El Coco. Debuting with the self-titled Le Pamplemousse album 1976, a string of successful 12″s followed, in particular “Le Spank” and “Get Your Boom Boom (Around The Room Room)” from their second album on which The Jones Girls contributed vocals, and “Monkey See, Monkey Do” and “Do You Have Any?”. The LPs were all packaged in erotic covers, centered around a juicy grapefruit. With the arrival of the 80s, disco’s popularity had dropped drastically, and their albums on to 1984’s final Put Your Love Where Your Mouth Is featuring some Gloria Gold were all poor sellers.

are an American girl group that formed in 1982, best known for their single “It’s Raining Men”.

The original members were Martha Wash and Izora Armstead. They are best known for their 1982 #1 club and pop hit, “It’s Raining Men”. Although the group is considered a one hit wonder by the mainstream pop market, they were previously known as Two Tons O’ Fun, under which name they recorded three songs which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart: “Earth Can Be Just Like Heaven” (1980); “Just Us” (1980 and also made #29 on the US R&B chart); and the Hi-NRG song “I Got the Feeling” in 1981. They also backed Sylvester and Bob Seger (1986). After the success of “It’s Raining Men”, other hits with the original line-up included “Dear Santa (Bring Me a Man this Christmas)” (for which an accompanying music video was made) and “No One Can Love You More Than Me”.

(on record sleeves often only Giorgio) (born on April 26, 1940 in Urtijëi (Ortisei), Italy) is a three-time Oscar-winning and three-time Grammy Award-winning Italian record producer, songwriter and performer. His work with synthesizers during the 1970s and 1980s had a significant influence on new wave, house, techno and electronic music in general. Particularly well known for his work with Donna Summer during the era of disco (including “I Feel Love” and Love to Love You Baby), Moroder is the founder of the former Musicland Studios in Munich, which was used as a recording studio for artists including Electric Light Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Elton John. He also founded his own record label the Oasis Records which later became a subdivision of Casablanca Records.

was formed in 1974 in Britain. In 1975 they won the RCA Soul Search Contest, whilst their first single “Let Me Take You Back in Time” was released in 1976. Finding their success quickly drying out, lead singer Leslie Johnson left the group, and their backing singer Precious Wilson stepped forward to front the band. They went on the road in Germany where Frank Farian, the producer of Boney M., took notice of them. Farian signed the group with the Germany-based Hansa Records and the band supported Boney M. on tour.

After a minor hit single with “Party Party”, their cover of “I Can’t Stand the Rain” from their first album (December 1977) was a big hit, reaching number five in the UK Singles Chart, and number 18 in U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by their second album titled Leave a Light launched towards the end of 1978. The first single of the album “I’ll Keep a Light in My Window” could not do as well as expected. (born 21 August 1950, Montreux, Switzerland) is a former model turned singer-songwriter, who had a string of hit records in France. While his early career was focused on making pop records, he found international success as a disco music performer in the latter half of the 1970s.
In Saint-Tropez he met French music producer Eddie Barclay, who allowed him to record a first single in 1971. He wrote Le Lundi au soleil sung by Claude François.

He represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1973 with “Je vais me marier, Marie,” before charting in the U.S. / UK with the disco tracks, “Où sont les femmes?” and “I Love America” later in the 1970s. (October 19, 1950 – November 12, 1982) was a disco and Hi-NRG dance music composer and recording artist. He recorded in a style that has drawn comparisons to that of Giorgio Moroder and is often credited with pioneering electronic dance music.
During a world tour with Sylvester in late 1981, Cowley complained of feeling increasingly unwell. Upon returning to the United States, he visited a doctor who diagnosed food poisoning. Weeks later, with his condition only worsening, doctors again failed to identify what was wrong with him. At this early stage in the history of the HIV and AIDS, misdiagnosis was common and so Cowley was discharged from the hospital (in 1982) after doctors could do nothing more for him.

After discharge, Cowley went on to complete two albums, his own Mind Warp and Sylvester’s All I Need, which was later retitled Do Ya Wanna Funk after its chart-topping hit. By the time of Mind Warp’s release, Cowley largely used a wheelchair and was unable to attend the launch event held at the Galleria Art Center in San Francisco. Subsequently Cowley began receiving in-home nursing care and died at his home, in San Francisco, on November 12, 1982. He was 32 years old, an early victim of AIDS (which was then still known as GRID). A couple of tracks were also completed for a planned Sarah Dash album that year, which was cut short by Cowley’s death. ….Read More

Shirley Goodman ,

(born Shirley Mae Goodman, 19 June 1936, New Orleans, Louisiana – died 5 July 2005, Los Angeles, California) was an American R&B singer, who had substantial success both in the 1950s and 1970s.

After singing in church choirs, she recorded her first demo with a group of friends in 1950. Some months later, her solo voice caught the attention of Aladdin Records owner Eddie Messner, who tracked her down and paired her as a duo with another school friend, Leonard Lee.

As ‘Shirley & Lee’, they recorded their debut single “I’m Gone”, produced by Cosimo Matassa, which reached #2 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1952. The record contrasted Goodman’s soprano with Leonard’s baritone, in a way in which subsequent songwriters have suggested was influential on the development of ska and reggae.

In their early songs, they pretended as if they were sweethearts and were dubbed “the Sweethearts of the Blues”. However, they changed style in 1956 and recorded “Let the Good Times Roll”, which became their biggest hit reaching #1 on the R&B chart and #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although a follow-up single, “I Feel Good” (not to be confused with their 1955 single “Feel So Good”), also made the charts, the duo’s later releases were less successful, and Goodman and Leonard split up in 1962. Leonard made some subsequent solo records with little success.

In the mid 1960s, Goodman moved to California, where she worked as a session singer on records by Sonny and Cher, Dr. John and others, and also formed a duo for a time with Jessie Hill. She sang backing vocals on The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street album, but then briefly retired from the music industry.

Later in 1974, as Shirley Goodman Pixley, she was contacted by her friend Sylvia Robinson, previously of the duo Mickey and Sylvia and now co-owner of the All Platinum record label, and was persuaded to record the lead vocal on a dance track, “Shame, Shame, Shame”. Credited to Shirley & Company, the record became an international pop hit, reaching #12 on the Billboard chart and presaging the disco boom. After a few further recordings and tours, Goodman finally retired from the music industry after returning to New Orleans in the late 1970s.

After suffering a stroke in 1994, she moved to California. Shirley died on July 5, 2005 in Los Angeles, CA; she was buried in New Orleans (a month and a half before Hurricane Katrina hit). She is survived by her son. ….Read More

The song, “I’m On Fire”, was then released in its own right and became a major hit throughout Europe, peaking at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart;[1] and at number 1 on the German Top100 Singles chart and the Swedish chart.
