J.J. Cale – Roll On

Posted by admin in !New Posts, Rock

J.J. Cale – Roll On ,

On February 24th 2009, Rounder Records released J.J. Cale’s ‘Roll On,’ the legendary songwriter and guitarist’s first solo album in nearly five years, and his debut for the label. ‘Roll On’ follows Cale’s Grammy-winning, gold-certified 2006 album with Eric Clapton ‘Road to Escondido.’
Cale wrote and produced all twelve songs on ‘Roll On,’ and plays all the instruments on most of the tunes as well, including guitars, pedal steel, bass, drums, piano and synthesizers.
He tracked most of the album at his home studio in California. Among the few exceptions is the title track to ‘Roll On,’ a previously unreleased collaboration with Eric Clapton, and the latest evidence of the pair’s incredibly fruitful, simpatico creative partnership.

Elsewhere, Cale adds a few curveballs – like the scat-sung opener ‘Who Knew’ and the jazz chords of ‘Former Me.’ – to his mesmerizing mix of blues, country, rock and other quintessentially American styles. The album is such a treat to the ears it’s easy to overlook the amount of work that goes into creating Cale’s signature ‘laid back’ sound. He played most of the instruments on his landmark first album ‘Naturally’ out of financial necessity. He does so on ‘Roll On’ out of a passionate, meticulous love of the craft.

Eric Clapton recognized that passion a long time ago. Two of his biggest hits as a solo artist – ‘After Midnight’ and ‘Cocaine’ – are Cale-penned songs. Other artists who’ve covered Cale include Johnny Cash, The Band, Chet Atkins, Captain Beefheart, Santana, The Allman Brothers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd; while Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, and Bryan Ferry have all cited his influence. ‘He’s a superior musician,’ says Clapton. ‘One of the masters.’

U2 – No Line on the Horizon ,

is the forthcoming twelfth studio album by Irish rock band U2, which will be released on 27 February 2009 in Ireland and Australia, 2 March in the rest of Europe, and a day later in North America. The album will be U2’s first since 2004’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, the longest gap between studio albums in the band’s career. The material was originally intended to be released as two EPs, titled Daylight and Darkness, but the band later decided to combine them into one album.

U2 began work on a new studio album in 2006 with Rick Rubin, although material from those sessions will not be a part of No Line on the Horizon. The band collaborated with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois from June 2007 – December 2008 for the album, allowing them to be involved in the songwriting process. The album was planned for release in November 2008, but the band had written approximately 50–60 songs and wished to continue writing. ….More

India.Arie ,

(born India Arie Simpson on October 3, 1975) is a Grammy Award winning American soul, R&B, and neo soul singer-songwriter, record producer, guitarist, and flautist.
Arie was born in Denver, Colorado. She absorbed musical skills early in life as she was encouraged by both parents. Her mother Joyce is a former singer (she was signed to Motown as a teenager and opened for Stevie Wonder and Al Green)[1] and is now her stylist. Her father is former ABA and NBA basketball player Ralph Simpson. She has an older brother named J’On. After her parents divorced, Arie’s mother moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia when she was thirteen.[2] Arie had taken up a succession of musical instruments throughout her schooling in Denver, but her interest in the guitar while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, led to a personal revelation about songwriting and performing. “When I started tapping into my own sensitivity, I started to understand people better. It was a direct result of writing songs”, she said at the press release of her debut album, Acoustic Soul. ….More

The Gibson Brothers ,

are a France based musical group, who had their greatest success during the disco boom of the late 1970s, and are best known for their hit single, “Cuba”.
The three brothers, Chris (born 20 June 1960) – (lead vocals, percussion), Patrick (vocals, drums) and Alex (vocals, keyboards) were born on Martinique in the West Indies. They recorded their first single “Come To America” in Paris in 1976, and both it and its follow-up “Non Stop Dance” made the charts in Europe, where they toured successfully. The following year they released “Heaven”, which was picked up by TK Records in the U.S.

In 1978 they recorded “Cuba”. The mix of disco beats, Latin percussion, soulful vocals and a catchy tune propelled the song to #1 in several countries, to the top ten in the U.S., and earned them four gold records worldwide. In the UK it made #41 on its initial release, and #12 when reissued in 1980. Like their other hits, it was written and produced by Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kruger, who also recorded hits by Ottawan, Sheila B. Devotion and others. Vangarde (aka Daniel Bangalter) is the father of Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk.

The Gibson Brothers had three further big hits in 1979 and 1980, “Ooh What A Life”, “Que Sera Mi Vida” (which sold over 5 million copies worldwide), and “Mariana”. They have continued to record and tour worldwide. ….More
