Pierre Bachelet naît le 25 mai 1944 dans le 12e arrondissement de Paris. Sa famille déménage à Calais, puis à Paris pendant sa jeunesse. Il est resté très attaché à Calais, ville natale de son père, où il aime se ressourcer. Il finit ses études diplômé de l’école du cinéma, rue de Vaugirard. Il part alors au Brésil pour réaliser un documentaire, Bahio meù Amor.

Il démarre sa carrière dans la publicité où il rencontre plusieurs réalisateurs avec qui il travaille par la suite. Il travaille à l’habillage sonore de l’émission Dim, Dam, Dom. Il écrit de plus en plus les musiques de publicités et de documentaires de ses amis et connaissances. Le plus grand succès dans ce domaine a été la bande originale du film érotique Emmanuelle de Just Jaeckin : 1,4 million d’albums et 4 millions de disques simples sont vendus. Born in Dunrea, Manitoba, Canada, his mother was a musician and he learned to play piano at a young age. In 1967, Lavoie won a singer-songwriter competition for the Société Radio-Canada French language television program, Jeunesse oblige which gave him his first major publicity.

The young franco-manitoban played and sang in English and French with two different groups but his singing career began to blossom following a 1970 tour in the province of Quebec.
